Message-ID: <9004301508.AA07935@nimsn41.> Over here in the UK in the late 1970's early 1980's when home micro- computing became affordable and popular, when a new machine had been on the market for a few months it was standard practice for lots of user books to be published which included ROM dissassemblies etc etc. Quite often circuit diagrams were also published. So as to Atari, Why cant they produce a set of definative manuals for the ST at an affordable price. This would stop mal-programming, would encourage more and better quality programmes to be written etc etc. To take two examples wouldn't current software be much better if everyone used .IMG format for graphics instead of having to fight through 7 or so other specs; also wouldn't it be great if we all used GDOS properly, again not having to cope with several in house product fonts, the latter by now would surely resulted in more GDOS fonts being available (a la Mac), and also more drivers. Ok so I know there is the Abacus set of books available but they are straight reference books (with and without mistakes), but to someone starting out down the road of programming for example 'The Gem programmers reference' is about as useful as a brick to someone who is drowning! So back to Atari. You guys youve got the data, youve got the ability, why not do it. Just think of the money.......yes money...... Do I detect ears perking up. Money..... Yes, as you say over there, 'Theres a quick buck to be made'. ] Money.... Put together some reasonable manuals which give us the information we need, yes need if good programmes are to be written, put some faith behind the old ST's, and while youre at it make a few bucks(strange currency...rabbits), or dollars or whatevers. great product shame about the user support, Nick. Disclaimer: these must be someones thoughts. PS. If you cant do this, lets have someone on the list from Atari, whose a real nice guy and is prepared to send in essays on topics eg 'How do virtual workstations work'. Failing this what about Holding topic conferences where each month a specific topic is chosen and milled over. Then summaries of the useful info can be archived for future use thus saving lots of repetative queries on the list being ignored etc. ------------------------------ Date: 30 Apr 90 15:43:11 GMT From: isc-br!techpub3!lawrence@uunet.uu.net (Lawrence Kelley) Subject: DCDESKTOP Message-ID: <2843@isc-br.ISC-BR.COM> In article <9004290701.AA28404@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU> MAXG@SUVM.BITNET ("Gerry Greenberg: 315-443-5378") writes: >Well, I just got my copy of DCDESKTOP. Can that RAM be reclaimed when you launch a program? Does DCDESKTOP reload automatically when you quit a program? Any light you can shed on these questions will be greatly appreciated. BTW I noticed the first of several demo files for this program in the binaries. Maybe they will have the answers. Shalom, lawrence I don't have an opinion. And if I did it would not represent my company. ------------------------------ Date: 30 Apr 90 17:51:44 GMT From: hillyer@endor.harvard.edu (Guy Hillyer) Subject: Fading SM124 inverse video Message-ID: <2731@husc6.harvard.edu> In article <9004271625.a015851@nabla.electrical-engineering.umist.ac.uk> idh@NABLA.ELECTRICAL-ENGINEERING.UMIST.AC.UK (Ian D Hawkins) writes: >When I use my SM124 monitor with inverse video (white on black) >I find that the characters become increasingly dim, eventually >becoming illegible; most especially when the screen is almost >entirely black already. I just keep cranking up the brightness control; eventually it reaches steady state. ------------------------------ Date: 30 Apr 90 14:26:02 GMT From: van-bc!ubc-cs!alberta!ccu!charltn@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU (Jim Charlton) Subject: Public domain GEM resource construction program Message-ID: <1990Apr30.142602.19589@ccu.umanitoba.ca> Several people have been asking about a public domain GEM resource construction program. I asked the same question last fall with no responses and so decided to write one. The resulting program has just been sent to comp.binaries.atari.st and should appear in the near future. The program is called MKRSC and will create menu and dialog resources. It will not (as yet) create icon objects. It has all of the usual bells and whistles including .C output. The program was extensively tested (resulting in many improvements) by Jwahar Bammi and Sam Streeper who put almost as much work into it as I did by testing the multiple early versions. Thanks a lot guys. The program works in mono and should work in color... but was not extensively tested in color. Any comments re problems or bugs will be very welcome. The sources (Laser C) will be posted to comp.sources and have also been massaged by J. Bammi to make them compatible with the gcc compiler. If there is enough interest perhaps I will also post a short demo program illustrating how to use the basic GEM functions such as windows, menu bars and dialog boxes. jim... charltn@ccu.umanitoba.ca ------------------------------ Date: 30 Apr 90 17:23:19 GMT From: wpg!frank@uunet.uu.net (Frank Sloan) Subject: Publisher ST and Tos 1.4 Message-ID: <2381@wpg.com> I'm having problems getting Publisher ST from Timeworks to work on a Mega ST with Tos 1.4. A friend of mine tells me that the problem lies with Tos 1.4 and that I should seek out 1.3 roms. Is this true? If so, could someone please provide some suggestions on locating an older version of Tos? Message-ID: <00935F86.6D0B9B40@eagle.oscs.montana.edu> I'm fairly new onto the ftp scene, and all the zoo'd and zoo/unzoo binaries I've downloaded in my entire life are from Terminator. The basic problem I have is in such an instance as with Nethack 3.0. A zoo file 400+ K long, extracting into the neighborhood of 750 K, unless someone bothered to install a 1.44 meg 3.5" or has 2meg+ Ram (neither of which I have with a 1040st), then it is quite literally impossible to exract all the files. I've tried to extract files individually, but with little or no success. Thanks ahead of time.
